Haute Spots: El Gaucho Winery

Head out to El Gaucho Winery for some great Argentinean wines and gorgeous views!

Nestled on a high vista overlooking the hills of Spicewood is where you will find El Gaucho Winery, by Bodega Familia Sewell. Eugenia and Bennett Sewell are the proprietors of this new wonderful addition to the Texas wine experience. All of their wines come from their vineyard in Argentina. Eugenia is a Sommelier and Bennett is a native of Austin.

Where did your passion for wine come from and how did y’all meet?

Bennett: Almost 10 years ago I visited the wine country in Mendoza, Argentina and was amazed. I decided to purchase a winery or vineyard so hired a consultant to help me and that was Eugenia.

Eugenia: Blame it on the wine! We now have two vineyards, got married and have a 5-year-old son.

Our passion comes from the history of wine, the romance, the happiness of making a great wine and, most especially, the enjoyment that a glass of our excellent wine brings to so many people.

Tell us about your wines and what’s haute at the tasting bar?

All wines start in the vineyard. Our vineyards just happen to be in Mendoza, Argentina at the feet of the spectacular Andes Mountains. We offer different varieties, but our focus is on Malbec. At the tasting bar check out Torrontes, a white wine unique to Argentina, and our award winning 2009 Estado Natural Malbec Reserve.

You’ve created a beautiful, relaxing space for tastings and special events. Tell us about the ambiance and experience you’re creating for guests.

Our indoor tasting room was designed in a combination of rustic and modern styles. Outside we have a spacious wine garden and dedicated play area for kids. We can host many different types and sizes of events near our outdoor grill area or on our gigantic deck overlooking the hill country.
